During the 1950s and 1960s, oversized wooden kitchen utensils became an iconic decorative element in mid-century homes. These statement pieces—typically carved from exotic hardwoods like monkeypod, teak, or acacia—were proudly displayed on kitchen walls as both functional art and symbols of post-war domesticity. The trend reflected the era's fascination with Polynesian culture, natural materials, and the celebration of the modern kitchen as the heart of the home. Often brought back as souvenirs from Hawaii or purchased from import shops, these carved fork and spoon sets represented a blend of craft tradition and contemporary design sensibility that defined mid-century modern living.
This exceptional pair of vintage monkeypod utensils has been meticulously restored at our Peregian Beach studio on the Sunshine Coast. Salvaged from disrepair, each piece has been carefully sanded smoothing back decades of wear. A sophisticated ultra-matte black finish provides dramatic contrast, while the custom laser-cut Baltic birch display stand—finished in vibrant tropical green—offers a fresh, graphic interpretation of the original aesthetic. Two silver mirrored elongated diamonds complete the composition, adding a touch of mid-century glamour to this handcrafted wall sculpture.
